A List Of Things I’ll Do When Lockdown Is Over

Apr 11, 2020

A non-exhaustive and light-hearted list of everything I want to do once lockdown is over.

A few weeks ago (or was it last weekend? Last month? Who is even keeping track of time anymore?), I took an Instagram poetry-writing workshop with Rupi Kaur. During the workshop, I wrote three poems (none of which I will be sharing in public). One of the poetry formats was a “list poem” and I’ve been playing around with this format a little since the workshop and having some (private) fun with words and ideas.

I think a lot of us are getting through current times by thinking about what we’ll do “afterwards”. I am very aware that the world and my own existence in it will not immediately go back to “normal” and that some aspects of life may be changed for ever. That said, while I’ve been staying indoors these last few weeks it’s been nice to think about all those small moments, sometimes ones which are fleeting or insubstantial out of an entire day, that I miss and can’t wait to do again.

A list of things I’ll do when lockdown is over…

– drive fast (within the speed limit of course) with all my windows down
– queue in Starbucks and order a single shot, coconut milk iced latte, tall sized with half a pump of sugar free vanilla syrup, please
– walk along a busy street quietly singing to the music coming through my headphones
– hug a friend tightly when saying hello
– run into the sea and get knocked over by a wave
– browse through a rail of clothes, just to feel the fabrics
– carefully count out coins to pay for something
– pet a stray cat
– roll out my mat on the floor of my favourite yoga studio
– fix my hair in the mirror of a restaurant’s bathroom
– steal a bite of a friend’s dessert
– fasten my seat belt and flick though the in-flight magazine during take-off
– flick through a pile of second-hand books and inhale deeply

What would be on your list?
