Where To Practice Yoga In Ubud

Sep 1, 2019

You know you really love yoga when along with doing a 200 Hours Yoga Teacher Training, you seek our yoga studios in the evenings and your days off, too.

I managed to check out four yoga studios in Ubud during my month in Bali. Read on for my guide for where to practice in Ubud. I’m already planning a trip back to yoga studio hop between these four studios!

The Yoga Barn

Probably Ubud’s most famous location for yoga, The Yoga Barn is way more than just a yoga studio but is a sprawling complex of studios, cafes, a natural health practitioner and a yoga store. There are classes daily from 7am – 8pm encompassing a huge range from power yoga, beginner yoga, restorative classes and meditations. I could spend an entire day here hopping between classes and the cafe. I attended a Vinyasa flow class in the beautiful Studio Nyoman. With around 50 attendees, an amazing playlist and a fast-paced flow I had so much fun in this class and loved the energy of the teacher and the group. The studio is semi-outdoors so be prepared to sweat (and feel super flexible as a result) and pack some insect repellent if the bugs find you tasty (the studio provides this and all mats, blocks, straps etc.). The class I attended as a Level 2 class and definitely not one for those starting out in their practice (not all poses were demo-ed and there isn’t much scope for individual teacher attention) but there is a daily “Intro To Yoga” class if you’re new to yoga.

Practicalities: a drop-in class is IDR130,000 (£7.50), the studio accepts card payment. There are changing rooms, showers, water dispensers (bring a reusable bottle), free wifi and a juice bar and cafe for after class. There is no advance booking so turn up 15-30 minutes before class to pay and grab your spot.

Intuitive Flow

A smaller studio in the suburb of Penestanan, Intuitive Flow’s glass walled studio looking over the Campuran Ridge is a serene spot for practicing. The classes follow a traditional pattern of Hatha and Vinyasa in the mornings and yin and restorative classes in the afternoons, as well as meditation and Yoga Nidra for those wanting deep relaxation and to explore yoga beyond just asana practice.. The studio feels really integrated with the local community and Balinese tradition. I attended a yin class with Nevin and his Balinese wife and it was amazing to deeply stretch with his clear, concise instruction while his wife chanted, sung and gave blessings around us. I’d also recommend the meditation classes with Luh Manis, a Balinese Priestess whom I met several times during my yoga teacher training and who has a talent for combining spiritual wisdom with real world insight.

Practicalities: a drop-in class is IDR130,000 (£7.50), cash only. There are no changing rooms or showers here so come ready for class. I’d recommend Yellow Flower Cafe (a 50m walk away) for a post-class refreshments. No advanced booking, as the studio is on the smaller size and so arriving 10 minutes before class to pay and grab a spot is fine.

Radiantly Alive

Tucked away in Central Ubud, Radiantly Alive is (another) beautiful spot to take a class. I loved the light airy studio with huge glass windows. The studio offers a range of classes and some really interesting sounding workshops which I can’t wait to return for. The mobility classes by Chris Fox came highly recommended by my Dubai-based yoga teacher (I unfortunately didn’t get the chance to attend one) and the Vinyasa Flow classes here will guaranteed leave you very sweaty but smiling! I loved the teaching style here – clear concise instruction, the teacher moving constantly around the room to offer modifications to individuals and a great mix of movement and spiritual practice. The attached cafe is a peaceful spot to take a break from the hectic streets of Central Ubud, too.

Practicalities: a drop-in class is IDR120,000 (£7). There is free wifi, an onsite cafe and everything you need for practice is provided. No advance booking so arrive 15 minutes before your class. Radiantly Alive also offers teacher trainings.

Ubud Yoga Centre

Located near the Ubud Monkey Forest, Ubud Yoga Centre is a spacious studio offering Hatha, Yin as well as having specific studios for hot and aerial classes. There is lots of space to chill out before and after class and to take in the beautiful surroundings. The studio also offers barre and Pilates classes too for if you want to try something different or (like me) have a partner who prefers Pilates to yoga… Highly recommend staying for a smoothie bowl served in a coconut shell after class!

Practicalities: a drop-in class is IDR130,000 (£7.50). You can book your class online, or on the MindBody app (I used this all for all my class bookings in Dubai and love it!). I’d recommend booking for the aerial classes as spots are obviously limited. If you want to use the studio’s lockers, then remember to bring your own padlock, or borrow one for a (very small) fee.
