The Life-Changing Magic of a Silk Pillowcase

Feb 17, 2020

One of the best things I’ve purchased recently is definitely a Slip silk pillowcase, specifically this one. I haven’t yet broken my no-fashion-or-make-up-purchases run so why, of all things to spend a small fortune on, a silk pillowcase?

Firstly, I am a front-sleeper and the combination of sleeping facedown on a cotton pillow case and my regular 5am morning alarm meant that I was too often teaching my first yoga class of the morning with a pillow crease still etched into my forehead or cheek. Sometimes the crease persisted even after a power yoga flow and countless downward dogs…

Secondly, Lauryn Evarts of The Skinny Confidential sleeps on a silk pillowcase. She may seem like an unlikely icon for the low-effort girl I now am but I cannot get enough of her specificity, her dedication to finding products which are “just so” and her super detailed way of breaking down her routines.

I bit the (silk) bullet and ordered one from Namshi (Dubai’s ASOS equivalent). It arrived the same day in a tiny square box with my expensive piece of silk nestled inside. There are cheaper versions available but given we spent (at least) a third of our lives in bed, I opted for Slip’s offering due to it being made from top grade 100% silk, dyed with non-toxic due and coming in a really beautiful range of colours.

The benefits of a silk pillow case include:

  • less hair breakage and tangling

  • hair and skincare remaining on your hair/skin rather than absorbing into your pillowcase

  • no more pillow creases on your face

  • hypoallergenic and resistant to the accumulation of bacteria

  • regulates temperature in any climate

I’ve been using mine for a week now and it really has changed my life. Or at least my hair and skin and that’s almost the same thing.

There have so far been zero pillow creases on my face and my serums and oils still feel just perceptible on my skin in the morning (rather than having long been absorbed by a cotton pillowcase). As for my hair, the baby hairs around my hairline seem a little less unruly and my day three hair now looks much more like my day two hair of old (I wash my hair twice a week).

It also just feels so….nice. The silk is always the perfect temperature (no having to lie on a cold pillow) and its super soft without being slippery. I had visions of my head just continually sliding off my pillow but it is soft without being slippery.

The pillow case is machine washable and folds up super small so it will definitely be coming with me on future flights (possibly with the matching eye mask) and taken to hotels and airbnbs.

I bought this with my own money and it was worth every penny. It would also make a great gift for the girl (or guy) who has everything else imaginable – I obviously adore the Zodiac versions!

Have you tried a silk pillow case?
